The framework for the collective improvisations presented on this recording was established by visual artist FOS.

FOS is well known for his design of structures that shape aesthetic and social experiences, from potteries to bars or stages in museums, on boats or in public, and for this recording the artist has created a system to co-compose and conduct an improvisation. It is, also, a system that enables a group of complete strangers to reach a co
mmon ground very quickly.

The system comprises a “traffic light” system of lightbulbs installed in front of each player. The light bulbs, which in this case are controlled by FOS, have three rules attached: A red light
is a signal to play free and lead, a blue light to follow, and all lights off to stop playing.

FOS says: “Compare this to a social event where an architectural frame establishes the cultural values and costumes. What sets it off into what is impossible to calculate is each participant’s references and reactions to the situation, and others re-reactions leading it into a myriad of causalities. Nothing becomes something by itself”

This system of light bulbs erases and enhances the common sense of both players and conductor and unites the two into a third organism. This too is social design. For this recording FOS
and producer Nis Bysted assembled a wide range of musicians with experience in many different genres, making the soundscape on this recording a varied and unclassical improvisation.
